Planès is a
traditional Pyrenees village located at an elevation of 1,550 meters above
sea level. This elevation places it, along with a handful of other towns in
the region, among the highest towns in the 600 kilometer long mountain range.
The Trans-Pyrenees
Hiking Trail (GR10) passes directly through the town on its route from the
Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
Our neighbors say
that in its heyday at the beginning of the past century, 200 people lived
and worked here: today there are only 40 people who live here year round.
The town is famous
for its Romanesque church dating from the 11th century with a unique treble-shaped
plan. The tiny church is a national historic monument and attracts visitors
year round.
There is also a small
cheese making farm run by the town shepherd who produces and sells his own
cheeses. At the farm, visitors can taste and buy fresh and cured sheep's cheese.
In addition to the
these manmade attractions, the town enjoys a spectacular natural setting with
views of the highest peaks of the surrounding area. On clear days, you can
also see the distant Mediterranean sea.
